BPCIT History|LC College

B.P.C. Institute of Technology is the first technological institute established in Nadia district. It was established in July 1956 on 7.70 acres of land donated by Late Bipradas Pal Chowdhury along with his family's financial assistance. It is known as Bipradas Pal Chowdhury Institute of Technology (shortly B.P.C. Institute of Technology or BPCIT) in honor of Late Pal Chowdhury. It was established in Krishnanagar, a cultural town famous as the capital of historic king Krishna Chandra as well as for its clay industry.

BPCIT History & Background

First, it was known as a Government-sponsored Institute under the control of the State Council for Engineering & Technical Education. Two courses were introduced initially: L.C.E. as a three-year diploma and draftsmanship as a two-year certificate course. Since the institute had no building of its own at the start, drawing classes were held at C.M.S. St. John's High School in the morning, and other classes took place at Krishnanagar Govt. College in the evening session. After completion of a storeroom and a workshop shed, classes were shifted to the workshop with the storeroom serving as an office after that year's Puja vacation. The majority of the building was completed in the next academic year, introducing diploma courses in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering with seat capacities of 90, 120, and 30 respectively. Seat allocations remained the same up to 1977, except for a special temporary increase to 60 seats in Electrical Engineering between 1973 and 1976. The Joint Entrance Examination system was introduced in 1978, setting seat capacities to 60, 60, and 40 respectively.

BPCIT Infrastructure

Although infrastructure has expanded over time, course offerings and overall intake capacity remained structured. The draftsmanship course was abolished in 1965, and a Post Diploma in Computer Science course was introduced in 1998 with assistance from a World Bank Project to adapt to modern technology requirements.

Government Recognition

The institute was officially recognized by the Government of West Bengal under the Directorate of Technical Education and Training, W.B., in September 1977. It has also been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) since the 1994–95 academic year.
